Molding and Casting Ergonomic Handle

Molding and Casting a Handle: Fall 2019 DIY: Design and Fabrication (24-672)

This is a continuation of the Ergonomic Handle Design project. We used our clay model to create a silicone mold that we would pour in a resin to cast the part.

Initially, the first top-half of my silicone mold had some issues. In order to save time and not start over completely, I cleaned up the bottom half of the mold and redid the top half, ensuring there was no leaks and enough mold release was sprayed on my part and the bottom half of the mold.

I casted 3 parts. Each of them turned out pretty well. I mixed a pink dye in the resin for my final part and sanded and polished any imperfections. They all had some air bubbles when I would sand them down, but this could have been avoided if my clay part was smoother to begin with.
